In this week’s The Disney Therapist Podcast, Tyler & Alan take a look at Disney Pixar’s Toy Story. They look at what the story can teach us about our identity and when we struggle with not fully understanding yourself. The show examines comparison, insecurities, belief systems, social awareness, and more. Along with looking at your shadow and how as kids, we loved Woody, but now not so much.

Woody is Anxious 

In this clip, we explore themes from Disney Pixar’s Toy Story. We look at the main character of Woody and how his behavior is driven by anxiety. Woody is anxious and that impacts how he leads Andy’s bedroom, and creates anxiety in the other toys. This is a great example of how our anxiousness can impact others, and even see that we can  become anxious  based on who we area around. 

Comparison & Insecurities

In this clip, we explore themes from Disney Pixar’s  Toy Story. Once Buzz Lightyear arrives in Andy’s room we see comparisons between Woody and Buzz.  In this video of Therapist Discuss Tyler & Alan talk about how comparison brings up Woody’s insecurities. They share  how when we (or  someone we love) compares us to others it can drive our insecurities. We can learn alot from because Buzz  teaches us how to work past insecurities

Buzzes Lack of Social Awareness

In this clip, we explore themes from Disney Pixar’s Toy Story’s Buzz Lightyears has a lack of social awareness. In Therapist Discuss Alan talks about the positive sides of Buzzes lack  of social awareness. Tyler points out that just be we have a lack of awareness does not mean its bad. We all lack awareness, and need to find ways to become more aware. 

Holding Space in Friendships

In this clip, we explore themes from Disney Pixar’s Toy Story. Tyler & Alan in Therapist discuss Toy Story, they explore what deep friendship means.  The song You’ve  got a friend in me.  When we say you have a friend in me  you are  holding space for your friendships.  Friendship is putting a part of yourself into the other person and that they can create space for you.  How deep friendship requires both authenticity and vulnerability. One of the lesions that Buzz & Woodys Friendship teaches us. 

Shadow

In this clip, we explore themes from Disney Pixar’s Toy Story. Tyler & Alan try to explain the concept of “the shadow.” This concept is one  of the hardest concept found in depth or Jungian  psychotherapy.  Tyler answers Is Sid Andy’s “Shadow?. Alan tries to explain how Scar from the Lion King is a great example of how Disney movies show psychology concepts.
